The year is 2023 and we have all watched the music industry evolve from being a male dominated profession, to women taking over the top spot with their musical abilities. Whether it’s spitting a fire sixteen bars, or belting out a melody, these women are proving why they deserve our attention and that they’re here to stay!
Here is a roundup of some Black female artists that I definitely blast in my car, in the shower, or when I’m getting ready for a night out.
Chloe Bailey has been giving us consistent singles along with memorable performances. Now, with the release of her debut album “Pieces”, we get to experience a full body of work from Ms. Bailey and we’re loving it!
Ari Lennox, who doesn’t get talked about enough in my opinion, dropped a phenomenal album in 2022 entitled “Age/Sex/Location”. Lenox gave us banger after banger and featured R&B girlies Chloe and Summer Walker. The Dreamville artist is currently on tour hitting about 30 plus cities.
Sza consistently held the number one spot on the billboard charts after her sophomore album release, “SOS”. Returning to the music scene 5 years after the release of her first album “Ctrl”, which stayed on repeat, fans were ecstatic to see our toxic queen make her comeback.
Lola Brooke is the new raptress on the scene out of Brooklyn, New York whose viral song “Don’t Play With It” stuck with us all after trending on TikTok. Her voice and swag gets you in that mood (ladies you know what I’m talking about). It’s undeniable! This one is sure to make it big this year, mark my words.
Glorilla is the cinderella story we didn’t know we needed. Straight out of Memphis, this one took the scene with a viral hit “F.N.F” which had everyone in a chokehold. That summer smash led her to signing with CMG Records. Another hit followed, featuring none other than Cardi B. Her album “Anyways, Life’s Great” came shortly after. I can’t mention Glo without BFF Gloss Up a.k.a “Glossiana hot as the summer”. The Memphis native caught the eye of Quality Control Music in the midst of dropping “Shabooya”. Her debut mixtape, “Before The Gloss Up” is out now.
QC’s princess, Lakeyah earned a spot on my playlist after I saw her perform on the Revolt Summit stage in 2022. Though a new artist, her talent would have you believe she’s been doing this for decades. Not only can she freestyle, this young lady can also sing, which gives versatility to her music.
Coi Leray brings a refreshing sound to rap music. She gets a spot on the playlist for bringing something new and staying in her lane when it comes to making music.
Coco Jones is no stranger to the industry, but since being swooped up by Def Jam Records, the Bel-Air actress has released back to back tracks that solidifies her as a powerhouse singer. Jones dropped her EP “What I didn’t Tell You” back in November of 2022 with the lead single being Caliber. ICU was the next hit she dropped, which showcases her beautiful voice and is still in rotation to this day!
I’m sure you all are scratching your heads as though I missed a few, but these ladies are just the tip of the iceberg. This list is a mix of new artists and those who have released new music. Of course my playlist also includes giants in the game like Latto, Tink, Beyonce, H.E.R, Queen Naija and many others.
